Nordic Magic Healing:
runes, charms, incantations, and galdr

Ancient Nordic, Germanic and Celtic Lore & Ancestry

Voluspa

This poem describes the creation and doom of the world. It therefore gives a general presentation of many characters and concepts typical of the Nordic legends. This presentation contains the Old Norse version and an English translation together with detailed comments about the various translations, or explanations from me, Boyer, Dillmann, Faulkes, Larrington, Genzmer, or De Vries. My presentation here is intended for beginners, despite the details it provides.

HRAFNAGALDUR ÓÐINS The Galdr of Óðinn's raven

Here is a commented version of this disputed poem. My only goal is to understand what the unknown poet meant to say.

ÞÓRSDRÁPA "In praise to Thor"

This poem, from the Edda, is well-known for being particularly obscure. It contains many kennings that are complex images, difficult to interpret. Each kenning provides a reading that leans on the unconscious memories of the Nordic man of the year one thousand, a time where grandma still told all these tales speaking of the Gods and heroes. I attempt, although it's impossible in principle, to provide a version that shows the beauty of the poem to someone who knows little about the Nordic myths, but who, at least, is also interested in them.

Friðþjófr or Fridthjof Saga (English) - La saga de Friðþjófr (Français)

This saga contains interesting information about Heathen religious attitude and magic.

Frau Holle

Here you will find a description of the ancient German Goddess, Frau Holle or Perchta or Perhata.

On Jacob

Read about the various rituals and practices surrounding Jacob's Day.

Loki

This is a summary of a French book, Loki, which contains an excellent argument that gives credit back to Snorri’s version of the Nordic myths. It includes a discussion of the discovery of legends from a people called "Ossets" a group of people living in the middle of the Caucasian mountains, who kept their Pagan legends very late.

Jordanes, The Origin and Deeds of the Goths

An excellent resource on the history of the Goths.

Scheffer

A section devoted to the early travels to Nordic countries that still retained a good amout of heathenism. The first page available at this point is Scheffer's compilation of the knowledge about Lapp country available until 1673.

Mabinogion

A new section gives each Mabinogi in its original version, in French (translation due to Joseph Loth - with his notes), and in English. Available at this point: " the Mabinogi of Pwyll" and "" the Mabinogi of Branwen."

Chacun des Mabinogion en Gallois, Français, Anglais. Disponibles: "Le Mabinogi de Pwyll + celui de Branwen".
